“The future depends on what we do in the present.” – Mahatma Gandhi

On the 27 September 2018 The Smile Emporium team started the day bright and early as we departed from Durban to visit the Simcelisile Educare Centre in the village of Lidgetton close to Howick. We were very fortunate to have Wandisa Ndindwa from Colgate to accompany us, in the big red Colgate bus!
We started off the day with an oral hygiene talk given by Wandisa, followed by a demonstration on how to brush. The children were then divided into groups, and a screening of the children’s teeth were done by The Smile Emporium team. Each child received two toothbrushes and a toothpaste from Colgate.
We then proceeded with our two activities for the day – The Smile Emporium team showed the children biscuit decorating with icing sugar, marshmallows and sprinkles. We also had colouring pages for the children. A big thank you to Unicopy Stationers for very generously donating 100 packs of colouring crayons to the school.
We wrapped up the day by preparing lunch for the children, a hot dog and juice was on the menu. The wind had calmed down by then and everyone had lunch outside. The school staff prepared a delicious lunch for our team before we headed back to Durban.
What an opportunity we had as a dental practice to be able to contribute in a small way to this community and treat these deserving children. Thank you to Mrs Sarah Jonsson and Mrs Ester Duma for allowing us this amazing opportunity.
